Asalamu alaykum (Peace be unto you).

I welcome you to the Gems of the Traveler blog. I hope you benefit from the contents of this blog. Just as Islam encourages us to be moderate and well-rounded individuals, I will make an effort to make this blog cover various aspects of Islam. Whether you are active in seeking knowledge, looking to purify your soul, spreading the message of Islam, or simply trying to find little reminders to keep you patient, I hope you find here what you’re looking for, taking with you some gems for your own journey through life.

I also encourage you, if you are unfamiliar with the teachings of this religion, to open your mind to this great message of Islam. If Fox News is the only medium through which you are learning about Muslims, I’m sorry to say but you will have a very negative and distorted view of Muslims. Read some books about Islam (starting with the Qur’an and the life of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him), visit your local Masjid/Mosque, or simply ask your Muslim friends about the reality of Islam. You will be amazed. Here are two examples: Abu Bakr (Ruben) and Dr. Lawrence Brown.

There are many organizations out there, that are facilitating the proper understanding of the message of Islam. AlMaghrib Institute is one of them. If you want some quality Islamic education in your area, or simply want to take a class or two to learn more about Islam, I encourage you to take a class with AlMaghrib Institute, the Islamic institute with the largest student body in North America. Check out www.almaghrib.org for more information. If you have other questions regarding the classes, contact me, and inshaAllah I will try to direct you further. The classes are offered multiple times throughout the year. The following is a list of some of the locations in which they are offered:

United States:
New York
New Jersey
Illinois (Chicago)
Ohio (Columbus)
Tennessee (Memphis)
D.C. Area
Georgia (Atlanta)
Michigan (Winsdor/Dearborn)

Northern U.K.

…and there are more locations added each year, as the institute expands (check on their website). Find a location closest to you, visit the forums, and enroll online now!

What does it mean to be a Muslim? The following statement is a summary of the entire message of Islam:

There is no deity/god worthy of being worshipped, except Allah. Muhammad (peace be upon him) is the Messenger of Allah.

[Surah al-Fatihah]
